💌 The era of building for everyone is over

I think this month marked a tipping point – one we aren’t talking about enough. On February 4, over $3 billion evaporated from the market in response to 200 lines of Claude Code. Markets move for many reasons, but this signal was clear: code is no longer scarce. For years, not speaking JavaScript felt like the only thing standing between me and my yearning to run my own business. Engineering teams spoke a language I couldn’t understand and that language was the moat. When scarcity collapses, defensibility shifts. What’s at stake isn’t just SaaS valuations – it’s who gets to build.

Technology has ridden this wave of shared demand. The playbook has been simple: build one platform, solve one broad problem, scale that, win big. But here's the thing – historically, media (not software) has been the real engine of technological acceleration.

Fiber-optic cables weren’t laid across the ocean because engineers wanted a technical challenge – they were laid because humans wanted to connect. Infrastructure scales when culture demands it. Pixar’s Toy Story proved that a fully CGI film could work emotionally and commercially, and that proof unlocked billions in investment. Once storytelling showed what was possible, hardware improved, rendering software evolved, and graphics technology accelerated to meet that expectation. Infrastructure didn’t lead – culture did.

Media and technology have played this beautiful game of ping pong for decades: Storytelling demanded better tools and tools enabled new storytelling. Volleying back and forth.

But something has changed.

This weekend I watched Hamnet. I sobbed. So many times. I wanted to trot into the forest and yap to anyone who would listen about it. That's what film does – it creates shared gravity. You watch something, and suddenly you have something in common with your co-workers.

New technological innovations don’t work that way anymore.

Technology has fractured. We don't want one-size-fits-all software anymore. We want customized recommendations, personalized workflows, niche communities. Tools that understand our taste in slip-on mules – and the exact alabaster linen shirt that matches.

The era of mass, horizontal SaaS built for everyone is smashing against a market that’s craving specificity. Shared cultural experiences scale because they bring people together. Software scales by dividing into smaller and smaller use cases.

And that shift has consequences.

We're entering an era of custom infrastructure. Tools built for specific problems, for specific people, often before those people even realize the problem exists.

And here's the most interesting part: you can monetize those ideas immediately.

I recently came across a marketplace where founders can list their startups for sale – live, liquid, transactional. We are living in a world where you can identify a problem on Monday, build a solution on Friday, and potentially sell it by Sunday.

That's not an apocalypse. That's a redistribution and everyone is invited to build.

Because the next generation of value won't come from building for everyone. It will come from building for someone – extremely well.
